The Cartography Department is primarily concerned with the production of maps. The department was established in 1931 to train geographers and map makers. Today, within this department there are three divisions: the Map Division, the CARTO division, and the Geographical Information Systems- Cartographic Division. The Map Division has six research units: Remote Sensing Unit; Global Positioning System Unit; Geomatics Analysis Unit; Photogrammetry Unit; Digital Elevation Modeling Unit; and Spatial Data Analysis. In addition, there are several research laboratories that provide advice to the faculty and staff of the department. The Map Division has some of the best remote sensing facilities in Asia. The Global Positioning System Unit conducts a variety of remote sensing research in a vast array of disciplines including atmospheric physics, oceanography, geology and mining. The Cartography department has some 30 academic staff members and close to 500 undergraduate and graduate students. It serves as an academic unit for the Faculty of Geographical Sciences and Engineering (FGSE). The department offers a range of bachelor's, master's, and PhD programmes in the areas of cartography and photogrammetry. The CARTO division is primarily concerned with the production of maps. It has 62 staff members and over 350 undergraduate and graduate students. The Geographical Information Systems-Cartographic division is primarily concerned with the production of maps. The unit has 59 staff members and over 250 undergraduate and graduate students. This department provides a training program in hydrography. Its main activities include the production of nautical charts, hydrographic surveys and the operation of a marine data processing center. The department has a staff complement of 50, including professors, lecturers and technicians. In 1972 the Department of Land Surveying was established as an affiliate to the Cartography Department being part of the Faculty of Geographical Sciences and Engineering at Beştepe. In 1984 Land Surveying was transferred to its own building within Bilkent City Campus. In 1989 it moved into a newly constructed building where it is based at present. In this building the Department of Land Surveying together with the Department of Cartography forms a separate academic unit called "Geomatics and Surveying". The mission of the department is to provide a high quality training in land surveying and cartography. The degree program is intended for graduates seeking careers in, or furthering their education in fields related to geomatics and photogrammetry. The Geomatics and Surveying Department currently has five academic staff members , fifteen graduate students, thirty-five undergraduate students, three postgraduate (master's) students, fifteen technician assistants. As of 2009, the Department has expanded its activities to include remote sensing operations using satellite images as source data for land survey systems. cfa1e77820
